Tateishi suffers from congenital spina bifida, which has caused dysfunction in both his lower limbs and internal organs, making it impossible for him to put pressure on his toes. Consequently, he has adapted to using only his heels to get around daily. When playing table tennis, he wears braces on both legs to maintain a forward-leaning position and uses a cane to support himself.
